OVB Breed History

The Olde Victorian Bulldogge does not include Pit Bull! Beware of dogs that are labeled "Old Bulldog" which often contain Pit Bull, or are a cross between English Bulldog and Pit Bull.

Because of the downfall of the modern day bulldog, the recreation of a better bulldogge was desired. The OVB was developed by Carlos Woods in 1988.

The OVB comes down from English Bulldog, American Bulldog, German Boxer, Staffy Bull and the Olde Bulldogge. Bulldogs owe their name to the fact that they were once used to guard, control and bate bulls. They were bred for their great courage, strength and agility. These traits were necessary for the dogs survival as they were used to participate in blood sports such as bear baiting and bull baiting. This horrendous "sport" of bull baiting was outlawed in England around 1835 and the bulldogges popularity and population dwindled drastically almost to extinction.

Today's modern Bulldogge is a recreation of those wonderful courageous dogs. Unlike the modern day English Bulldog, they are a healthy and athletic breed. They do not have the genetic health problems that plague the AKC English Bulldog. They are free breeders, free whelpers and are devoid of any breathing problems. They are friendly and loyal and make excellent household companions.

The Olde Victorian Bulldogge is an Olde Bulldogge but is a line of the Olde Bulldogge created by Carlos Woods of My Bulldogges/Woody Bulls in North Carolina. The Olde Victorian Bulldogge is being bred and shown to the Victorian Era Standard. A large, smooth coated dog with a wide heavy built torso and chest. He is large headed with thick bones that does not impede vigor. Broad muzzle with a short face, but not too short to hinder breathing capabilities. Hindquarters should be slightly higher than the foreparts.

The bulldogge should have a symmetrical body and be well muscled. The OVB must be loyal and courageous but must have a stable temperment. The reason that the Victorian Bulldogge Association exists today is that the CKC(Continental Kennel Club) and others would not register the Old Victorian Dogge correctly, they continued to register the dogges as OEB's when they were asked not to. The VBA adopted the name Olde Victorian Bulldogge to completely separate themselves from the OEB Breeders.

THE OLDE VICTORIAN BULLDOGGE CAN ONLY BE REGISTERED WITH THE VICTORIAN BULLDOGGE ASSOCIATION.
